Listening to Birds at the End of the World

Hannah Hunter (she/ her) is a cultural, environmental and historical geographer based at Queen’s University. Her PhD project, supported by a SSHRC Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, explores the lives and afterlives of historical bird sound recordings in North America. She is broadly interested in human-nature relationships, sonic geographies, and science and technology studies, as well as knowledge mobilization in the form of public scholarship. Her work has been published in various academic and public outlets, including The Conversation and Environment and Society, and she has several journal articles and book chapters based on her PhD research in press. Hannah holds an MA (with Distinction) in Environment, Development and Policy from the University of Sussex, and a BA (Honours, first class) in international relations from the University of Birmingham.

The Allegorical Build: Material Allegories and Minecraft

Richy Srirachanikorn (he/him) is a master’s student of sociology at Concordia University. He is focused on understanding the experiences of lonely and socially withdrawn people, and how video games and media are used to cope with their everyday lives. Particularly, he uses the generative potential of nostalgia. In this SSHRC Insight project, alongside Bart Simon and Darren Wershler, Richy incorporates his generative nostalgia framework into the collaborative, social and enjoyable experiences of gamers, with the Allegorical Build. In time, Richy hopes to work with mental health professionals, socially withdrawn individuals, and virtual world creators to ensure future digital spaces are more accommodating to the demands of their users, whilst mitigating social pains associated with loneliness.

Arvin Jagayat is a PhD student in psychology at Toronto Metropolitan University. Victoria Woghiren is a master’s student in social work at Wilfrid Laurier University. She has educational and work experience in the field of social work, but what really sets her apart in this work is her lived experience in child welfare. Victoria became a Crown Ward at three years old and is passionate about sharing her experiences in care to help better the lives of youth in her community. In August 2020, she was appointed to the Premier’s Council on Equality of Opportunity, where she sat alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Canadian radio host Jamil Jivani to provide advice to the government on how to help young people flourish and achieve lifelong success.

Joanie Caron has a bachelor’s in finance, a master’s in organizational management and a PhD in Indigenous studies. She specializes in Indigenous workforce integration in the mining sector and teaches natural resources management at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT). She has published five scientific articles and received more than 15 awards and university scholarships, including a Governor General’s of Canada gold medal, the ACFAS natural resources award, and a Canada Graduate Scholarship—Doctoral from SSHRC. Her master’s thesis, which focused on formulation of a sustainable development standard for mining exploration, led international company UL to put in place an innovative certification program. Joanie has participated in the program since 2012, first as lead for standard development at UQAT, then as project manager and director of implementation with the Quebec Mineral Exploration Association.

Having graduated in 2016 from École normale supérieure de Paris, Oriane is doing her PhD in film studies at the Université de Montreal under the supervision of Isabelle Raynauld. Specifically, Oriane studies practices in writing for artworks in virtual reality. Her field of expertise is design and scripting of artworks in virtual reality and 360 degrees. She is also knowledgeable in the production and distribution of these types of artworks. She is currently developing a virtual reality dance piece, Under Water.

Oriane is also a screenwriter and cultural journalist. She is interested in contemporary art, as well as cinema, theatre and dance. She hosts the podcast Humaniteq, on new technologies and their impact on society.

Attentive to the complexities of eating disorders for many years, Leïla Mostefa-Kara developed her expertise in affiliation with the Groupe de recherche transdisciplinaire des troubles du comportement alimentaire (GR2TCA-Loricorps), a transdisciplinary, intersectoral research group on eating disorders. After completing her studies in tourism management and international affairs in France, she received a master’s in leisure, culture and tourism from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. She is currently pursuing a PhD in biomedical sciences at the same university. Her doctoral studies, carried out within the GR2TCA Loricorps framework, involve integrated research into complementary and often unexpected expertise in leisure, culture, tourism and mental health, to better understand, assess and intervene in mental health in a collaborative and innovative way.

Noah S. Schwartz is a doctoral candidate in political science at Carleton University, specializing in public policy and administration. His research focuses on group politics and firearms policy in Canada and the United States. Noah has used both quantitative and qualitative methods to study pro-gun movements across North America. His research interests include group politics and social movements, politics of narrative and memory, theories of the policy process, and firearms policy. Noah completed his master’s in defence, development and diplomacy at Durham University in the United Kingdom, and his bachelor’s at Carleton in global politics. Investigating e-cigarette use in young adults

Sydney Seidel completed her bachelor’s (honours) in psychology at the University of Calgary in 2020. Under the supervision of doctors Daniel McGrath and Tavis Campbell, Sydney in her honours thesis investigated vape and electronic cigarette use in young adults. Using an ecological, momentary assessment methodology, Sydney explored how vapes and electronic cigarettes are used in real world conditions. Currently, Sydney works as a research coordinator and looks forward to beginning her studies as a clinical psychology graduate student in September 2021.
