Supporting struggling communities

Homelessness, poverty and migration in northern Ontario

Laurentian University’s Carol Kauppi is helping address poverty and homelessness in northern Ontario, mobilizing communities at the grassroots level and developing programs to help those communities better support citizens in need.

Kauppi leads a unique research project examining the underlying causes of poverty, poor housing, and homelessness in northern Ontario, seeking to understand their impact while giving communities the tools they need to ensure that the most basic human needs of their citizens are met.

Bringing together partners from First Nations, service organisations, municipalities, health organisations and universities, the project focuses on sharing and applying knowledge gleaned through practical projects and social action.

By working in and with communities, Kauppi and her team are providing new insights into the complex web of factors behind poverty, homelessness and migration issues.
