Return of In Conversation With—SSHRC’s series of public talks—featuring the 2022 Impact Award winners

January 10, 2023

SSHRC’s series of public talks, In Conversation With, organized in partnership with The Conversation Canada, will return this January for its second season. In keeping with our inaugural series, In Conversation With will feature the winners of SSHRC’s Impact Awards, some of Canada’s most accomplished social sciences and humanities scholars, whose perspectives are shaping our understanding of people and society.

Over the next few months, editors from The Conversation Canada will host live virtual interviews with 2022 SSHRC Impact Award winners Cindy Blackstock, Jan Grabowski, Fannie Lafontaine, Jordan Stanger-Ross and Semra Sevi. and. They will cover a wide range of topics including inequalities affecting First Nations children, youth and families, the multi-faceted history of the Holocaust in Poland during the Second World War, pathways to justice for victims of international crimes, the dispossession of Japanese Canadians during the 1940s, and voting behaviour.

Cindy Blackstock will kick off the 2023 series on January 20, 2023, at 11 a.m. (eastern): register here. Blackstock is professor in the School of Social Work at McGill University and the executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada. She has dedicated her career to examining the inequities in First Nations’ child welfare services and the overrepresentation of First Nations children in care, and to developing policies to address these issues. Blackstock is the recipient of SSHRC’s 2022 Gold Medal.

All events will be open to the public and will include a question and answer period. The sessions will be in either English or French, with simultaneous interpretation and closed captioning available in both languages.
