SSHRC launches new Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative
Initiative aims to support partnership research to inform actions to address disparities related to race, gender and other forms of diversity
Following a federal Budget 2021 investment of $12 million over three years, SSHRC is pleased to announce the launch of the Race, Gender and Diversity Initiative. Starting in 2021-22, SSHRC will fund research into systemic barriers facing diverse groups, with grants valued at up to $450,000 over three years.
This initiative will support community-based and community-led research, carried out in partnership with postsecondary institutions, that is based on the lived experiences of underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, including but not limited to women; First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples; Black, Asian and other racialized peoples; people living with disabilities (both visible and invisible); LGBTQ2+ people; religious minorities; and others marginalized on the basis of their ethnicity and other identity factors; as well as individuals who identify as, or belong to, more than one of these groups.
The research project funding will be awarded competitively, through a merit review process, by a diverse, multidisciplinary and multisectoral adjudication committee of external experts with both research and lived experience.
Applications may be submitted by a team of researchers consisting of one applicant / project director affiliated with an eligible Canadian institution and participants such as co-directors, co-applicants and collaborators, as well as partner organizations, of which at least one is a Canadian postsecondary institution. Grants under this initiative can also be awarded to project directors affiliated with Indigenous not-for-profit organizations in partnership with other organizations not necessarily from the postsecondary sector.
All organizations wishing to apply for a grant and to administer grant funds, if awarded, must first obtain institutional eligibility at SSHRC. As indicated in the funding opportunity description, organizations that do not currently have institutional eligibility must contact SSHRC as soon as possible to discuss the required steps. You can consult the list of already eligible institutions on the SSHRC website.
For full details about the application process and eligibility requirements, consult the funding opportunity description.
