Canada’s top young economists to meet Nobel laureates

Nine students nominated by SSHRC to attend Lindau Meeting in Germany

Ottawa, ON, June 29, 2017 | What questions would you ask a Nobel laureate? Nine Canadian students in economics are getting their questions ready as they prepare to join a group of 360 nominees from 66 nations taking part in the sixth Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences to be held this August in Germany.

Lindau meetings provide an opportunity to exchange knowledge, ideas and experience between and among Nobel laureates and young scholars.

“The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is honoured to have these talented, SSHRC-funded doctoral students take part in an amazing training opportunity at this prestigious event,” said Ted Hewitt, president of SSHRC. “Participation by promising scholars in these types of international opportunities contributes greatly to sustaining and enhancing Canada’s position as a global leader in humanities and social sciences research.”

SSHRC selected a number of scholarship and fellowship holders in economics, based on their rank established during the adjudication process, and submitted their names to the scientific review panel for the Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences. The students and researchers were judged on, among other criteria, academic and research achievements, motivation, and dedication. The selected attendees will have their travel, as well as part of their participation, costs covered by SSHRC.

Every three years, organizations from across the world nominate brilliant emerging economists to participate in this four-day program, which includes numerous lectures and panel discussions. Key topics at this year’s meeting will include monetary and fiscal policy, as well as the economics of inequality. Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank, will be the keynote speaker at the opening ceremony.
