Description

This Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)-SSHRC initiative offers research training awards and supplements to postdoctoral researchers and doctoral and master’s students in the social sciences and humanities whose work is related to one or more of the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas for action.

Value and duration

The CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Scholarship Program has three streams of funding:

  • CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Postdoctoral Fellowships: $70,000 per year for 24 months;
  • CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarships: $40,000 per year for a maximum of 12 months, by which:
    • if offered, the CMHC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarship will replace the first year of funding of any previously offered and accepted SSHRC Doctoral or Canada Graduate Scholarships—Doctoral (CGS D) award. After 12 months, the previously accepted SSHRC Doctoral or CGS D award will become active for the remaining duration of the originally offered funding; and
  • CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplements: $10,000 for 12 months, in addition to the value of the CGS—Master’s (CGS M) award, SSHRC Doctoral Award (which can be a CGS D award or SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship) or SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply to any of the funding streams, applicants must be working in research areas related to one or more of the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas for action.

The eligibility requirements listed below for each stream also apply.

For the CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Postdoctoral Fellowships, applicants must first be eligible to apply to the SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships competition.

For the CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarships, applicants must first be eligible to apply to the SSHRC Doctoral Awards competition.

For the CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplements, applicants must first be eligible to apply to one of the following funding opportunities:

  • CGS M (under the “social sciences and/or humanities field of research” stream);
  • SSHRC Doctoral Awards; or
  • SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships.

You must also provide a one-page justification explaining how the proposed research project relates to one or more of the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas for action.

CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplements

You must also provide a justification statement that explains how the proposed research project relates to one or more of the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas for action.

Recipients of a SSHRC Doctoral Award (CGS D or SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship) or SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship who applied for a CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarship or Postdoctoral Fellowship will be considered for a CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplement, to the limit of available funding. There is no separate application process for the CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplements.

Merit review

Applications submitted to the SSHRC Doctoral Awards and SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships competitions are reviewed first by the relevant SSHRC merit review committee.

Applications to the CGS M competition are reviewed first by institutional merit review committees, as outlined in the selection process for the CGS M competition.

Merit review committees do not review the material (justifications ) submitted as part of the CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Scholarships Program.

After the merit review phase, the funding streams will follow the review processes outlined below.

CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships

To ensure applicants provided the required information in line with the application process instructions, SSHRC staff will review the one-page justifications submitted with those applications that were judged meritorious through the SSHRC Doctoral Awards and SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships competitions.

CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplements

To be considered for a CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplement, applicants must first be successful in the CGS M, SSHRC Doctoral Awards or SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships competition.
SSHRC staff will review the justifications to ensure applicants provided the required information in line with the application process instructions.

Review by CMHC

After validating that applicants’ justification statements align with the instructions, SSHRC will forward eligible applications to CMHC for a relevance review and ranking.

CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research scholarships, fellowships and supplements will be offered to eligible applicants whose proposals CMHC deems to be most relevant to its research areas. The awards and supplements will be offered to the limit of available funding.

Conditions of funding

All CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research award and supplement recipients must accept the terms and conditions of their CMHC-SSHRC award or supplement, as set out in the notice of award (including attachments). Recipients must also adhere to all terms and conditions attached to their SSHRC or CGS award.

To maintain eligibility for CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research funding, award and supplement holders’ research must remain within the National Housing Strategy’s priority areas for action.

Reporting requirements for each funding stream will be outlined in the notice of award and letter of offer.

CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships

A CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarship or Postdoctoral Fellowship cannot be held simultaneously with a SSHRC award. If a SSHRC award holder accepts a CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Award or CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Postdoctoral Fellowship, this award will replace their SSHRC award.

Should an applicant be offered a 24-to-48 month SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship or CGS D, the SSHRC-CMHC Housing Research award would replace the first 12 months of funding of the SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship or CGS D. After 12 months, the SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship or CGS D would again become active for the award holder.

CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplements

To hold a CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Supplement, recipients must hold an active SSHRC-funded CGS M, a SSHRC Doctoral Award (CGS D or SSHRC Doctoral Scholarship) or CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Doctoral Scholarship, or a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship or CMHC-SSHRC Housing Research Postdoctoral Fellowship.
