In March 2012, at the Planet Under Pressure conference in London, United Kingdom, SSHRC joined with research funding agencies from 10 nations in signing the Belmont Forum memorandum of understanding. The signatory nations are Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
By signing the Belmont Forum agreement, and guided by the Belmont Challenge, the funding agencies of these countries commit to working proactively and on an action-oriented basis to enhance co-operation and co-ordination of global environmental change research.
While not offering additional or dedicated research funds, SSHRC invites Canadian researchers interested in the themes put forward by the Belmont Forum to develop proposals that involve their international colleagues and partners and to submit their applications through funding opportunities offered under SSHRC’s Insight and Connection programs. Furthermore, SSHRC award holders working in areas related to the Belmont Forum can use their existing research funds to participate as collaborators on applications being submitted to the Belmont Forum’s calls for proposals. SSHRC will also assist its grantees in establishing contact with other international researchers to create new networks of research collaboration and co-ordination.
