Overview
Federal support for research is an investment by the people of Canada. It is important for taxpayers to know how research dollars are being spent. By demonstrating the value of your research, New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) award recipients help strengthen public understanding of and support for high-risk, high-reward, interdisciplinary and international research.
Taxpayers should know that this research is funded by the Government of Canada through the NFRF program. NFRF is an initiative of the Canada Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC) and is managed as a tri-agency program on behalf of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
Acknowledging your NFRF support
As a NFRF award recipient, you are required to acknowledge, verbally and/or in writing, your NFRF funding and the role it has played in your research. This applies to the following cases: media interviews, speeches, and presentations at conferences and workshops; conference or workshop materials, web materials, press releases and other media materials; and publications, project reports, monographs, videos or films and other outputs of the research project, citing the name of the funding opportunity. You should also acknowledge NFRF funding when receiving an honour or award or acting as a spokesperson for a public issue related to your research.
Whether acknowledging your NFRF funding verbally or in writing, you must make it clear that your research project was supported by the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund, through the three federal research funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) and is not a product of them. For example, the Government of Canada logo and acknowledgement of NFRF funding should not appear on the front cover/entry page of a publication, but rather on a separate acknowledgements page.
Acknowledgements should be made in Canada’s two official languages, English and French. For further information, consult the SSHRC Official Language Policy.
In communications products
In your communications products (presentations, hand-outs, etc.), you are required to use the Government of Canada logo and an acknowledgement message. Neither should be used in isolation.
Download the Government of Canada logo and add one of the following statements:
The [name of program, project or event] draws upon research supported by the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF).
[Nom du programme, du projet ou de l’activité] repose sur des recherches financées par le fonds Nouvelles frontières en recherche du gouvernement du Canada.
Or
[Researcher’s name or project name] is supported in part by funding from the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF).
[Nom du chercheur ou du projet] est financé en partie par le fonds Nouvelles frontières en recherche du gouvernement du Canada.
For example, depending on which statement you use, it should appear as:
![]()
The (name of program, project or event) draws upon research supported by the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF).
[Nom du programme, du projet ou de l’activité] repose sur des recherches financées par le fonds Nouvelles frontières en recherche du gouvernement du Canada.
For guidelines on using the Government of Canada logo, visit the Official Symbols on www.canada.ca.
In cases where multiple grants, funding agencies and partners have supported the research project, all sources of funding and support should be listed.
In publications
Please quote your funding reference number [NFRFx-yyyy-xxxxx]:
We acknowledge the support of the Government of Canada’s New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), [NFRFx-yyyy-xxxxx].
Using the NFRF visual identifier
If space allows, you may also use the NFRF visual identifier to communicate that your research was funded by the NFRF program. The use of the NFRF visual identifier should not replace or overshadow the display of the Government of Canada logo and acknowledgement message; it should be complementary.

Amplifying your work on social media
When you post content related to your NFRF-funded research on social media, ensure you tag the three federal research funding agencies so we can help spread the word.

- showcase and celebrate research excellence through award ceremonies and other events.
We depend on you to inform us of your research initiatives, developments and discoveries, especially those that will be published, so that we can work with you, your institution and other funding partners (if applicable) to publicly promote its value and impact.
