Ted Hewitt, president of SSHRC, today applauded five talented students who have been named this year’s top research storytellers. The five were selected from among 25 finalists of the Storytellers contest—an annual challenge to find innovative ways to communicate the impact of social sciences and humanities research.
The Storytellers contest calls on postsecondary students to demonstrate—in three minutes or 300 words—how SSHRC-funded research is making a difference in the lives of Canadians. To do so, students show how the new knowledge generated by social sciences and humanities research helps Canadians understand and improve society and the world.
“Congratulations to all the finalists and the winners. Their stories are a source of inspiration as we continue to demonstrate how social sciences and humanities research is important to Canada and the world,” said Hewitt.

The final round of the competition took place in front of a live audience at the 2019 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted by The University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
The panel of judges included: Dominique Bérubé, vice-president of Research Programs at SSHRC, Shari Graydon, author, journalist and founder of Informed Opinions, Nicola Luksic, producer of CBC Radio’s Ideas, Patrizia Albanese, president of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences, and Pierre Normand, vice-president of External Relations and Communications at the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
