Funding tip of the month: What you need to know about scholarship and fellowship increases
- Award values for federal scholarships and fellowships increased on September 1, 2024.
- Effective September 1, 2024, all award holders with an active award will be eligible for a prorated increase to the award value for the remaining duration of their award.
-
The Vanier program, the latest competition of which launched in mid-June 2024, will continue under its current parameters until it is replaced by the new, streamlined awards program proposed in Budget 2024. The three federal research funding agencies will not reduce the value of any active awards under the Vanier program. If you hold, or have recently received, an award, the agencies will honour the commitment until the end of the award’s term.
- The latest Banting competition, launched in April 2024, will follow existing parameters, and not undergo change until it is replaced by the new, streamlined awards program proposed in Budget 2024.
- The agencies are aware a significant number of trainees are paid from grants, and are considering how best to support these individuals through the Budget 2024 investments. More details about Budget 2024 scholarships and fellowships investments will be shared as they become available, likely in the fall.

By celebrating underrepresented sporting populations, the St. Thomas University sociology professor believes Canadian culture and media can foster greater inclusivity.
