SSHRC funds collaborative international research to advance knowledge in the social sciences and humanities

International research collaboration strengthens research excellence by bringing together the right skills and expertise. To advance this goal, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is pleased to announce that it is investing $3.5 million over three years to support eight Canadian research teams in their collaborations with their international peers as part of the Open Research Area (ORA) 8 call.

ORA is an initiative of national research funders that aims to strengthen international cooperation in the social sciences and humanities by funding high-quality scientific research projects. The ORA 8 call includes national research funders from Canada, France, Germany and the United Kingdom. SSHRC’s investment is leveraging more than $11.5 million from the international funders.

Each funded project is expected to make an original and significant contribution to scientific knowledge, and involves researchers from at least three of the four main participating countries. Projects feature an integrated work program across the national subteams, demonstrating the added value of transnational collaboration.

The SSHRC-funded Canadian researcher teams will work with international researchers, each funded by their respective national agency, on eight projects that explore important topics, such as sustainable food systems, the impacts of metadata in evaluating research, and the internationalization of higher education with virtual learning.
