Objectives
The purpose of the Jules and Gabrielle Léger Fellowship is to
promote better understanding of the diverse contributions of the Crown
and its representatives to all aspects of Canadian life.
Description
The fellowship supports research and writing on the historical and contemporary
contribution of the Crown and its representatives, federal and provincial,
to the political, constitutional, cultural, intellectual and social life
of the country. This includes comparative studies of Canadian and other
Commonwealth systems.
Value and Duration
One non-renewable fellowship is offered every second year and is tenable
for 12 months. There are no restrictions on the place of tenure. The award
consists of a $40,000 stipend plus $10,000 for research and research-related
travel expenses. This award may not be used to complete the requirements
for a degree program. Note that awards must be taken up between April
1 and October 1 of the year for which they are awarded.
Eligibility
Applicants
Applicants must be
affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution. This fellowship
is not intended for scholars at the beginning of their research careers.
Preference will be given to applicants with at least five years of proven
research experience in their field. Please note that all applicants, as
well as anyone else participating in any capacity in the proposed project,
must not be under SSHRC sanction for financial or research misconduct.
Institutions
Institutions that propose to administer any fellowship awarded under
this program must meet the requirements for the management of SSHRC funds
and hold or obtain institutional eligibility.
Evaluation and Adjudication
The Jules and Gabrielle Léger Fellowship is awarded through a
competitive process. Applications are evaluated by a multidisciplinary
selection committee of experts from the research community.
Every effort is made to secure at least two external written assessments
of each application before it is adjudicated by the committee. The adjudication committee
considers, but is not bound by, the judgements of the external assessors.
The committee recommends to SSHRC which applicant should receive the
fellowship. This recommendation is subject to approval by SSHRC.
Applicants receive copies of all information used to make a decision,
including external written assessments and/or the committee deliberations
relating to their application. If they are unsuccessful, applicants may submit
a new application in a subsequent competition.
Applications are evaluated using these criteria:
- academic achievement, experience, publication record and research
aptitude of the applicant; and
- quality of the proposed research project.
Administrative Regulations
Applicants must comply with SSHRC's Regulations
Governing Grant Applications and with the regulations set out in the
Grant
Holder's Guide. In particular, the Financial Administration section
of the Guide gives detailed information on eligible and ineligible expenses.
