The award consists of a $40,000 stipend plus $10,000 for research and research-related travel expenses. This award may not be used to complete the requirements for a degree program. Note that awards must be taken up between April 1 and October 1 of the year for which they are awarded.

Evaluation and Adjudication

The Jules and Gabrielle Léger Fellowship is awarded through a competitive process. Applications are evaluated by a multidisciplinary selection committee of experts from the research community.

Every effort is made to secure at least two external written assessments of each application before it is adjudicated by the committee. The adjudication committee considers, but is not bound by, the judgements of the external assessors. The committee recommends to SSHRC which applicant should receive the fellowship. This recommendation is subject to approval by SSHRC.

Applicants receive copies of all information used to make a decision, including external written assessments and/or the committee deliberations relating to their application. If they are unsuccessful, applicants may submit a new application in a subsequent competition.

Applications are evaluated using these criteria:

  • academic achievement, experience, publication record and research aptitude of the applicant; and
  • quality of the proposed research project.

Administrative Regulations
