Research for a Better Life

Meet the
Top 25
Storytellers

SSHRC is challenging postsecondary students to show Canadians how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future prosperity. We’re looking for storytellers and data journalists, social media masters and aspiring filmmakers.

Send us your pitch communicating a great SSHRC-funded research project happening at your institution.

Overview

  • INTRODUCTION

Bold research projects reveal new opportunities: key insights into pressing challenges; unexpected partnerships and surprising collaborations; a thriving culture of innovation.

Discoveries in social sciences and humanities benefit people, communities and businesses.

This is research for a better life.

  • STEP 1: PITCH

You’ve got three minutes to tell us why a research project matters. The research can be yours, it can be a professor’s (get their permission first!), but your pitch needs to be creative, compelling and clear.

    Ready? You’re up.

Send us your pitch communicating a great SSHRC-funded research project happening at your institution.

Grab our attention, be creative, push the boundaries: use a podcast, op-ed, vlog or infographic.

What is the story? Where is the research taking us? How does it impact Canadians?

The top 25 submissions will receive a prize valued at $3,000, an invitation to a special communications workshop at Congress 2013 in Victoria and the chance to deliver a featured presentation at this year’s World Social Science Forum in Montreal.

Submissions accepted from February 16 to March 1, 2013

  • STEP 2: DEVELOP

Selected pitches will receive one of twenty-five prizes valued at $3,000, registration and accommodation at Congress 2013, national promotion of your project and a place in a specialised research communications workshop.

The workshop, to be held June 3, 2013, will feature hands-on mentoring and training from experienced communications professionals, a moderated panel of experts and specialised group sessions.

Later that day at the Storytellers Showcase, the 25 invited workshop participants will take the stage and deliver their pitch in front of a live audience and a panel of experts. The jury will select five to present a final talk at the 2013 World Social Science Forum in Montreal this October.

  • STEP 3: SHARE

Share your research story with the world.

As chosen at Congress 2013, five jury-chosen presenters will be featured at the 2013 World Social Science Forum in Montreal (October 13 to 16, 2013), covered by national media and promoted by SSHRC.

    Research for a better life:

Ideas like yours change our world and define the future.

It's time to show us how.

  • ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

SSHRC would like to thank the following for support and participation in this exciting initiative:

People-focused research matters. How you tell its story is just as important.
