Leading international affairs scholar wins Molson Prize

(Toronto, September 11, 2003)—Today in Toronto, Dr. Janice Gross Stein, an international affairs expert, was awarded this year’s Molson Prize in the social sciences and humanities.

The prize recognizes Stein’s pioneering research in international studies, specifically her work on the role of negotiation in preventing and managing conflict. A Middle East specialist, her knowledge of patterns of conflict and cooperation has greatly contributed to peace-building efforts and to the development of Canadian foreign policy.

The jury cited “her tireless work with non-governmental organizations, community groups and the voluntary sector to build capacity and share knowledge.” Among the many groups that have benefited from her expertise and leadership are the Canadian Medical Association, CARE Canada and the United Way of Toronto.

Stein is currently the Belzberg professor of conflict management and negotiation in the department of political science at the University of Toronto and director of the university's Munk Centre for International Studies.

Dr. Janice Gross Stein’s work in the field of international conflict management has been supported by numerous SSHRC grants.
