SSHRC-funded researchers win Governor General’s Innovation Awards

On May 13, 2019, the Rideau Hall Foundation announced the recipients of the fourth annual Governor General’s Innovation Awards. Two SSHRC-funded researchers were among the six new laureates.

We would like to congratulate Chief Dr. Ronald Ignace (Stsmel’cqen) and Dr. Marianne Ignace (Gulḵiihlgad) of Simon Fraser University’s Department of Linguistics for this recognition of their decades-long work to create a new model of collaborative approaches to research in and with Indigenous people and communities. These new approaches respect and further public understanding of Indigenous peoples’ connection to the land and language.

The Governor General’s Innovation Awards recognize exceptional Canadian individuals, teams and organizations for their transformative work to help shape our future and improve our quality of life. By celebrating excellence in innovation across all sectors of Canadian society, the awards aim to inspire Canadians, particularly Canadian youth, to be entrepreneurial innovators.
