SSHRC has reached a major social media milestone: it now has more than 15,000 Twitter followers in English and over 2700 followers in French.
SSHRC joined Twitter in 2010, our first tweet going out at 6:43 p.m. on May 2. And no, it wasn’t, “just setting up my twttr.” It was to the point “SSHRC News http://bit.ly/arx2mp,” and directed followers to SSHRC’s website.
Twitter links weren’t clickable at the time, so our first few, eager followers had to cut and paste the url into their browser to read the SSHRC news item.
Things have come a long way since then: SSHRC reached 5,000 followers in 2014, and 10,000 in 2015. This summer, we reached another milestone: 15,000 followers in English, and over 2,500 in French.
Most users would agree social media has become vital for connecting with stakeholders on a personal level. Of all social media platforms trending today, Twitter is the most popular for organizations like SSHRC. The microblogging site is free, requires minimal effort to use, and has more than 300 million users worldwide monthly.
The more followers any account has, the better that person or organization can harness Twitter’s power as a marketing tool.
“The more followers SSHRC attracts on Twitter, the better we can promote program updates, deadlines and any other relevant news to thousands of interested people…all with a single tweet,” said SSHRC’s Digital Marketing Advisor David Holton. “It’s a simple calculus: more followers means more chances of a tweet being seen, and of further engaging with our community through retweets, likes and replies.”
