From April 1, 2014, to March 31, 2015, SSHRC received over 13,500 funding applications and awarded more than 4,100 new grants and fellowships.

Over the course of competitions, some 500 people participated in Talent, Insight and Connection merit review committees, and SSHRC received over 4,800 external assessments of project proposals, in addition to thousands of reference letters for scholarship and fellowship applications.

Additional competition results from the 2014-15 fiscal year are included below.

Note that a number of competitions take place in April and early May 2015; results for these will be released over the coming months.

Attracting, retaining and developing students and researchers in the social sciences and humanities

Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program

  • Master's Scholarships: 1,294 scholarships awarded.
  • Doctoral Scholarships: 430 scholarships awarded. 69 per cent went to students in their first year of doctoral studies, while the remaining 31 per cent went to second-year students

Canada Graduate Scholarships

  • Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements: 121 scholarships awarded
  • Vanier: 192 applications received, with 55 scholarships awarded

Doctoral Fellowships

  • SSHRC: 1,947 eligible applications received, with 580 fellowships awarded

Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • SSHRC: 836 applications received, with 184 fellowships awarded
  • Banting: 141 applications received, with 23 fellowships awarded


Building new knowledge in the social sciences and humanities

Insight Grants

  • 1,991 applications received
  • 466 new awards were announced, representing a success rate of 23 per cent and an average amount of $175,741
  • $81,895,282 was awarded in new grants, to be issued over five years and supporting some 880 researchers, participating as applicants or co-applicants

Insight Development Grants

  • 1,257 applications received for the February 2015 intake of Insight Development Grants. Adjudication will take place in May.


Mobilizing social sciences and humanities knowledge

Connection Grants

  • The Connection Grants funding opportunity received 450 applications, awarding 289 grants in support of short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives such as events and outreach activities.

Knowledge Synthesis Grants


Encouraging collaborative research by supporting talent, fostering insight and building new connections

Community and College Social Innovation Fund

  • 85 applications received for the newly-launched Community and College Social Innovation Fund. Adjudication will take place in early June.

Partnership Development Grants (PDG) competition

  • 128 applications received, 51 awarded funding

Partnership Grants—Letter of Intent competition

  • 99 applications received, 28 awarded funding

Partnership Grants—Formal competition

  • 28 applications received, 12 awarded funding. Recipients to be announced in May 2015
