Martin Kirk, director of research services at The University of British Columbia, was raised in Scotland and completed his first degree in chemistry at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh before acquiring his PhD in applied chemistry at the University of Calgary.
Kirk has held positions such as associate vice-president of research and director of research services at the University of Calgary, having also worked at Imperial Oil.
Kirk is president of the Canadian Association of University Research Administrators (CAURA), a member of the Thomson-Reuters International Research Analytics Advisory Board, and a member of the International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS) council. He is also a member of Consortia Advancing Standards in Research Administration Information (CASRAI) where he co-chairs a committee developing a standard on research metrics.
Previous roles include: president of the Calgary Science Network; chairman of the Calgary chapter of the Chemical Institute of Canada; and member of Canadian Council for Animal Care.
