Paul K. Bates

Paul Bates

Paul K. Bates has been a leader and educator in the Canadian business community for more than two decades. A certified management accountant and fellow of the Society of Management Accountants, Bates has been president of four major brokerage and investment firms, including, most recently, Charles Schwab. He currently serves as strategic advisor on the development of McMaster University’s presence in Burlington, Ontario.

In 2000, Bates was recognized by Investment Executive magazine as the most influential broker of the year. In 2002, he was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for community service. Following service on the boards of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Investment Dealers Association of Canada, in 2003 Bates was appointed part-time commissioner to the Ontario Securities Commission, where he served until 2009.

Previously, Bates has been dean, and a professor in financial management services, at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business. He has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, where he received Outstanding Educator awards in 2003 and 2004. Bates recently completed the second edition of his bestselling book, Sales Force Management in the Financial Services.
