From April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2017, SSHRC received over 13,000 funding applications and awarded more than 4,300 new grants and fellowships.

Over the course of competitions, some 700 people participated in Talent, Insight and Connection merit review committees, and SSHRC received over 3,600 external assessments of project proposals, in addition to thousands of reference letters for scholarship and fellowship applications.

Additional competition results from the 2016-17 fiscal year are included below.

A number of competitions have also taken place in April and early May 2017, with results to be released in the coming months.

Attracting, retaining and developing students and researchers in the social sciences and humanities

Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program

  • Master's Scholarships: 1,280 scholarships awarded
  • Doctoral Scholarships: 430 scholarships awarded. 64 per cent went to students in their first year of doctoral studies, while the remaining 36 per cent went to second-year students.

Canada Graduate Scholarships

  • Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements: 129 scholarships awarded
  • Vanier: 180 eligible applications received, with 55 scholarships awarded

Doctoral Fellowships

  • SSHRC: 2,043 eligible applications received, with 430 fellowships awarded

Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • SSHRC: 879 eligible applications received, with 151 fellowships awarded
  • Banting: 157 eligible applications received, with 23 fellowships awarded


Building new knowledge in the social sciences and humanities

Insight Grants

  • 1,514 eligible applications received
  • 605 new awards, representing a success rate of 40 per cent and an average amount of $153,366
  • $92,786,355 was awarded in new grants, to be issued over five years and supporting some 2,049 researchers and collaborators

Insight Development Grants

  • 549 grants were awarded in 2016
  • 1,236 eligible applications received for the February 2017 intake of Insight Development Grants


Mobilizing social sciences and humanities knowledge

Connection Grants

  • 701 applications received
  • 394 grants awarded in support of short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives such as events and outreach activities

Knowledge Synthesis Grants


Encouraging collaborative research by supporting talent, fostering insight and building new connections

Partnership Development Grants competition

  • 143 eligible applications received, 51 awarded funding

Partnership Development Grants – Healthy Productive Workplace Initiative

  • 57 eligible applications received for this partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, 20 awarded funding.

Partnership Grants—Letter of Intent competition

  • 81 eligible applications received, 26 awarded funding

  • SSHRC funds 1,000 international researchers, representing 79 different countries
  • SSHRC works with 123 international partners

    • 43 per cent of Partnership Development Grants involved at least one international partner
    • 60 per cent of Partnership Grants involved at least one international partner
  • 19 per cent of postdoctoral fellows held their awards abroad
  • 38 per cent of Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships are held by international students
